Valentine’s Day / El Día De San Valentín

February is the month of love and with that comes the annual “Hallmark holiday” of Valentine’s Day.  But do you know the origins of this celebration of love? Most historians agree that Valentine was a third century priest from Rome who performed marriages of young lovers in secret.  You see at that time Emperor Claudius II thought that single men made better soldiers and so made it illegal for them to marry.  Unfortunately for Valentine, when it was discovered that he was marrying these men, he was sentenced to death.  For this reason, Valentine (who later became Saint Valentine) is considered to be a champion of love.

Nowadays Valentine’s Day is more of a commercial holiday, where millions are spent on greeting cards, chocolates, and flowers. In fact, Valentine’s Day is the second largest card-sending day of the year after Christmas. This is where we get the term “Hallmark holiday” after the famous greeting card company.

Febrero es el mes del amor y con él llega la “Hallmark holiday” del Día de San Valentín. Pero ¿conoces los orígenes de esta celebración del amor? La mayoría de los historiadores están de acuerdo en que Valentín fue un sacerdote romano del siglo III que celebraba matrimonios de jóvenes amantes en secreto. Verás, en ese momento, el emperador Claudio II pensó que los hombres solteros eran mejores soldados y, por lo tanto, prohibió que se casaran. Desafortunadamente para Valentín, cuando se descubrió que casaban estos hombres, fue sentenciado a muerte. Por esta razón, Valentín (que luego se convirtió en San Valentín) es considerado un campeón del amor.

Hoy en día, el Día de San Valentín es más una fiesta comercial, donde se gastan millones en tarjetas, chocolates y flores. De hecho, el Día de San Valentín es el segundo día de mayor envío de tarjetas del año después de Navidad. Aquí es donde obtenemos el término «Hallmark holiday» por el nombre de la famosa compañía de tarjetas.
