Halloween

October is the month of the year where an old Celtic tradition meets a world of marketing, parties, costumes, and makeup.  But do you know the real meaning of this word?  Halloween originates from the Celtic festival of Samhain (/sä′win/) when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. It is said that this was the time of the year when the divide between the real world and the spirit world was at its weakest. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain in a way to convert the pagan Celts to Christianity. The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve, (Hallow meaning “holy”, so the evening of all the holy saints) and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns from pumpkins (originally made from turnips), festive gatherings, wearing costumes and eating treats. Octubre es el mes del año donde una antigua tradición celta se mezcla con un mundo de marketing, fiestas, disfraces y maquillaje. ¿Pero conoces el verdadero significado de esta palabra? Halloween se origina en el festival celta de Samhain (/sä′win/) cuando la gente encendía hogueras y usaba disfraces para protegerse de los fantasmas. Se dice que esta era la época del año en que la división entre el mundo real y el mundo espiritual era más débil. En el siglo VIII, el Papa Gregorio III designó el 1 de noviembre como un momento para honrar a todos los santos. Pronto, el Día de Todos los Santos incorporó algunas de las tradiciones de Samhain para convertir a los celtas paganos al cristianismo. La noche anterior se conocía como la víspera de Todos los Santos (“Hallow” significa «sagrado», es decir, la noche de todos los santos sagrados) y más tarde como Halloween.
