An eternal question that I get from students: “Which accent is the “best” accent” to use when speaking English? Many people learning English are usually either taught “American English” or “British English” as a standard. However, English is spoken in many more countries than the United States or Great Britain. In fact, English is recognized as an official language in a total of 67 different countries, as well as 27 non-sovereign entities. So that’s at least 94 different accents to consider, and then, there are the varieties of accents in each of those countries. Take Ireland for example, the type of English spoken there is referred to by linguists as Hiberno-English (from the Roman name for Ireland – Hibernia). There are hundreds of different accents on this small island alone, depending on which part of the country you are in. So as a learner of English naturally you would like to have one single accent as a reference that you can use right? Sure, by all means choose one and use one, it’s a matter of personal choice. But wait, have you ever considered using your own accent?? Just like I have a West-Cork accent in English, you can have a Spanish accent in English, or a German accent or a Chinese accent! Why not use your own accent? That means you have one less thing to worry about! In fact for some people a Spanish accent can sound sexy or mysterious. Who knows, you may even find the love of your life thanks to using your own accent in English! So my advice to students is always this; use your own accent in English, it doesn’t matter, the most important thing is that you can communicate clearly and effectively, that, in the end, is what languages are for!

A muchas personas aprendiendo inglés normalmente se les enseña el inglés Americano o el inglés Británico como estándar. Entonces como estudiante de inglés es natural que quieras tener un solo acento como referencia que puedes utilizar, ¿verdad? Por supuesto, si quieres, elige uno y utiliza uno, es cuestión de una elección personal. Pero espera, ¿alguna vez has te has planteado utilizar tu propio acento? Eso significaría que tendrías una cosa menos por lo que preocuparte. ¡De la misma manera que yo tengo un acento del oeste de Cork, tu puedes tener un acento español en inglés, o alemán, o chino! De hecho, algunas persona consideran en acento español en inglés como “sexy” o “misterioso”. ¿Quién sabe? ¡Incluso podrías encontrar el amor de tu vida hablando inglés con tu propio acento! Entonces, mi consejo para mis alumnos es siempre; utiliza tu propio acento, no importa, lo más importante es que comuniques de manera clara y eficaz, que eso, al final, es la función de los idiomas.
